BondTech has a dual geared drive system Titan has a geared ratio. I too am wondering about what extruder is "better". I just bought an E3D Titan and I'm sure it'll be a large improvement over my direct-drive Airtripper, which has struggled with my Bowden setup.

What an improvement!!! Highly recommend this extruder to anyone looking to upgrade! Let me share my experience I use 1. Since the information on BMG was still is very scarce, I ordered the Titan and coupled it with a tiny "pancake style" stepper motor.
No matter what pressure I set the hobbed wheel spring, after some time, it starts grinding. Even at lower speeds, it is quite noticable, as the plastic chips and "dust" accumulate arount the hobbed wheel, but if the speed is low enough, it seems to pull through.
I tried lowering acceleration on extruder, fidded with the jerk settings, lowered retraction speed, I had to design a new carriage for it they look very similar, but the hotend position is just differnet enough, that the previous one didn't fitbut since the change, it works flawlessly.
At all speeds, that my printer is capable of.
I miss the preview of the hobbed wheel spring tension, that the Titan has, but on the other hand I don't have much need for changing the setting anyway. The filament change on the BMG, is almost as simple as the titan's that was the big drawback on the older Bondtech extrudersthe filament advance wheel is a bit more awkwardly positioned, but still usable. I mounted the Titan on my old Prusa i3 clone, which never gave me any problems with its MK8 extruder for the last 3 years.
E3D Titan, which extruder to buy? BondTech V.As readers of this blog will know, I use a Diamond mixing hot end. For retraction to work with a mixing hot end, it is necessary to retract all loaded filaments concurrently. If just a single filament is retracted, then all that happens is that molten filament is drawn from one or more of the other inputs, rather than from the nozzle tip. Retracting all the filaments together is accomplished by using firmware retraction.

Firstly, if left at print temperature for an extended period of time, PLA will hydrolyse become more and more runny. Secondly, even with very high air flow over the heat sinks, after several hours at print temperature there will be some heat creep and the plastic will soften in the area of the heat break. Constant retraction and un-retraction will cause the softened plastic to get pushed into the shape of the tube or PTFE liner effectively to swell.
Thirdly, constant retraction and un-retraction of the same piece of filament can cause it to get ground away — even completely through. For these reasons I always try and keep all filaments moving forward at least slightly. So at any point in time, only two filaments are moving forward but all 5 are being retracted and un-retracted.
This failed print is an example. The second problem of swelling due to heat creep can also be overcome simply by having a good grip on the filament to force it through.
The third problem of filament being ground away is less easy to deal with. Of course, if the filament gets ground way, then it has an impact on the second problem — i. A very hands on approach and not at all ideal.
The way I deal with that was to not use firmware retraction. That is to say, I printed it by only retracting the filament that was in use and the others remained stationary.
Effectively, no retraction which lead to a very stringy print which took a lot of cleaning up. So what I need is another extruder that can retract and un-retract the same section of filament thousands of times without grinding it away.
Of course, that is a lot to ask of any extruder and as I use five of them, I need to reasonably confident that any alternative to the E3D Titans would be worth the money. The failed print above took 27 hours to print on the second attempt. So I decided to create a test rather than print an actual object because it would be faster and use less filament. At the same time, I wanted the test to simulate an actual print as closely as possible.
I decided to use the 3 colour version of the Diamond, rather than the 5 colour version because that was already fitted on the machine. The extruders for this hot end are numbers 0, 2 and 3 extruders 1 and 4 are used with the 5 colour Diamond. I installed the Bondtech in place of one of the Titan extruders extruder 0.
I decided to use PLA as that is the filament which has given me the most problems. Softer and specialty filaments might need some adjustment as they need to be compressed more than ABS or PLA for the drive gears to grip well. So one of the main advantage of having a two-sided filament drive is that you get twice the drive force before the extruder starts to strip out the filament. For example, the way it is built makes it impossible to mount to the standard RepRap hole pattern, which is two M4 mounting holes and the hotend mount dead center in between them.
Which can take a while. What i do have a problem with here is that, at least for me personally, and probably also for the very vast majority of users, the Bondtech does not actually add any extra value.
Probably cost me 25 bucks for the entire extruder. They do lose out to the Bondtech when it comes to high-speed printing with something like an E3D volcano, but, again, they still work perfectly fine for day to day printing with a normal hotend and the common materials. If you want the absolute strongest extruder you can possibly buy, then by all means, the Bondtech extruder is absolutely what you want.

The Bondtech Mini has a Dual-Drive gear setup that grips the filament from both sides which makes this a good choice if you are using TPU or other flexible filaments. It is recommended that you also order the modified mounting bracket to make installation easier, otherwise you will need to modify your existing bracket some to make the extruder fit.
The documentation for the Bondtech Mini was preliminary at the time I installed the kit but has since been updated and contain step by step instructions and a template if you will be modifying your existing mounting bracket will require some extra tools.
Check the website for updated documentation since the link I show may be changed in the future. The installation was pretty straight forward. The existing extruder needed to be removed and then the stepper motor needs to be removed because it will be reused with this kit. Set everything aside except for the original plastic lever, plate and drive gear since these will be replaced with the Bondtech Mini parts.
Assembly of the Hinge part was next and pretty straight forward. This consisted of installing the secondary gear and bushings into the recessed part of the hinge and securing in place with the short shaft. The back and front housings were installed on the original motor and the lever assembly installed on the housing. Next the gears need to be aligned with the filament path which was straight forward and easy to do.
The mounting bracket installs the same way as the original and while I was at it i upgraded my X bearing blocks to the new longer ones. The following step is the only tricky part of the installation.

Be sure you are careful with the thermistor and heater wires they break easily and do not touch the parts while hot. Follow the instructions carefully since this is the part that was confusing to me again, I had preliminary installation instructions. Finally assembly went smoothly. The original cooling bar mounts to the new or modified bracket the same way as before. The heat sink and fan are spaced off the cooling bar using the included shim due to the depth of the Bondtech housing.
The fan and heatsink are secured through the cooling block and Bondtech housing into the stepper motor using the included longer M3 screws.
The last step is to reverse the direction of the stepper motor since the drive gears operate backwards from the original. If you happen to have compiled your firmware yourself you can just invert the extruder direction in firmware and re-flash the controller board and if that is not possible you will need to remove a few wires from the stepper motor connector and flip them around see Bondtech Instructions. The new ESteps will be changed to from the original 96 or I found the installation went smoothly after studying the instructions a couple of times.
I highly recommend that you go ahead and purchase the optional mounting bracket to make installation easier unless you just like hacking on stuff. The installation is a little more advanced compared to other extruder mounting due to the changes that need to be made to the hotend and stepper motor wiring. If you ever had issues feeding filament with the OEM extruder then this extruder has a big advantage with the dual high torque gears that grip the filament from both sides and push it downward to the hotend.
